10 tips for picking the right retirement spot

Here are some tips for finding a place for the right retirement spot that fits your budget and interests.

o Move to a place with a lower housing, food and entertainment cost.
o Be sure to choose a low-tax locale.  Evaluate property taxes and local tax exemptions for seniors.  Places like Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington and Wyoming don’t levy on income tax while Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no sales tax.
o As you age, your health care needs will increase.  Make sure your retirement spot has adequate health care and elder-care facilities.
o Choose a location that is still near your family.  Many retirees also like to become more involved in their grandchildren’s lives.
o If you haven’t saved enough, you need to find a place that offers plenty of part-time job opportunities or consulting work in a field that interests you.
o Choose a retirement spot that fits your interests.  If you’re into art galleries, golf courses or hiking trails, you should find a place that fits your need for recreation and culture.
o You should also consider the public transportation in the location because retirees reach a point when they cannot drive a car anymore.
o Look for a home that is smaller because as you age, you will be less able to maintain a large home.
o Also consider the weather.  It is hard to shovel snow or defrost a car while warm climates can cause larger-air conditioning bills.
o Amenities like libraries, internet, cell phone access, shopping, religious centers and senior centers should be found in your retirement location.
