What is it with San Diego County residents that they seem to be having a difficult time catching up on their taxes? Well, we don’t know about that. But what we know is this news: 46,751 San Diego County residents were delinquent on, or have not paid, their property taxes, says San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister. According to him, delinquent taxpayers in the county owe more than $289 million in back taxes. What an immense amount, isn’t it? But that is even lower than the county’s back taxes last year. We see this is not bad news after all.
If we are going to talk about tax default notices, you’ll be surprised by how many the county sent out last year. 1,000 tax default notices? Nope. 5,000? Not even close. Multiply it by ten. Yup, 50,000 tax default notices were sent out last year! That’s definitely a higher figure compared to the number they sent this year. Maybe this time the delinquent tax payers have really learned their lesson.
“The number has decreased, which demonstrates that more people are stepping up to protect their single most important investment, their home. We are confident that the number will improve once taxpayers receive these notices,” says Dan McAllister.
Well, we hope you’re right Mr. McAllister. Keep the numbers dropping and keep up the diligence in sending tax default notices. It’s obviously working.
